The effect of mucle fibre type on eccentric exercise damage.

Conclusions

  • When the same range of sarcomere lengths are involved, muscle damage is independent of fibre type.
  • Previous reports of fibre type differences are probably due to either;
    • Different activation of different fibre type in whole animal experiments,
    • Different fibre types in the same muscle working over different parts of the length-tension curve.
    • Different length-tension curves may be due to different training.
  • This is in accord with sarcomere non-uniformity explanations of eccentric exercise damage.
