Muscle length is a major determinant of damage from eccentric exercise.
  • This is consistent with hypotheses involving sarcomere instability on the descending limb of the length-tension curve.
  • All experiments on eccentric exercise should include careful determination of optimum length for each muscle.
  • The effect of training appears to be only by shifting of the length-tension curve, presumably by addition of sarcomeres.
