Research Activities

The Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering at Monash University is part of the Faculty of Engineering, and based at the Clayton campus. It includes the Centre for Biomedical Engineering, the Centre for Electrical Power Engineering, the Intelligent Robotics Research Centre, and the Centre for Telecommunications and Information Engineering.

The current research activities in the Department fall into the following broad categories:

Academic Staff may also include descriptions of their research on their web pages

How to apply

If, after reading the enclosed information, you wish to apply to undertake either a research or coursework postgraduate program, please assemble and mail to us all the components of the following:

    http://www.eng.monash.edu.au/prospective/apply.html
  • A photocopy of a detailed transcript of your tertiary qualifications. This should include, whenever possible, lists of subjects taken and grades achieved. Should you be admitted, the Faculty will need to sight the originals. Applicants need an honours degree in a four-year course from an Australian university, or its equivalent.
  • Details of any technical publications which you have authored. If these are in journals, please include accurate references. If they are technical reports, please include a copy, or at least a detailed abstract.
  • Outline the area of research which interests you. Please be reasonably specific. "electrical engineering" tells us nothing, and "communications" or "computer engineering" very little.
  • If you are an overseas applicant, from a non-English speaking country, we require evidence of proficiency in the English language.
  • It is the usual practice for the Faculty to admit all research candidates initially to the MEngSc. degree. If appropriate, research students may be allowed to transfer to Ph.D. after 12 months of MEngSc candidature. Each application for transfer is considered on its merits.

    Fees

Overseas students should be aware that they are liable to fees of approximately A$26,900 per annum for Master of Engineering Science, Doctor of Philosophy. The Australian Government requires documentary evidence that a student has access to sufficient funds to cover both fees and living expenses. Full details of current fees can be found on the Universities Fee pages.

    Scholarships

A very limited number of scholarships is available. Competition for these is fierce, so they are awarded only to exceptional candidates. Scholarship application forms become available around September each year. The closing date for applications is 31st October for Scholarships tenable the following year. Top-up scholarships are available.

Applicants should also consult the University's Scholarship Information.

The department has multiple postdoc and PhD research scholarships on offer that relate to projects in the smart RFID area.

    Appointments

From time to time prospective postgraduate students arrive here in the hope of talking to us and being shown around. They are frequently disappointed, because the relevant staff have other commitments. If you are in Melbourne, please contact us first to make an appointment to talk to a staff member in the area of your interest.
