Bachelor of Technology (Computer Studies)

About the course

The Bachelor of Technology (Computer Studies) course covers a wide range of computer technology in a unique blend of computing and engineering. Graduates from this course have the skills to be able to work in fields such as:

  • computer sales engineering
  • office automation
  • staff training
  • programming
  • systems analysis
  • data communications
  • teaching

The Bachelor of Technology (Computer Studies) is a course developed in partnership with Holmesglen Institute of TAFE and Chisholm Institute, to allow students to articulate from a TAFE diploma to a degree course at Monash University. The course is conducted at the Clayton campus of Monash and allows students to gain skills in both the computing and engineering fields.

How does it work?

The Diploma of Technology (Computing) is offered at both Holmesglen Institute of TAFE and the Frankston Campus of Chisholm Institute. On successful completion of the first year of the course students are eligible for the Certificate IV and/or may complete the second year of the diploma or apply to transfer into the second year of the Bachelor of Technology (Computer Studies) course at the Clayton campus of Monash University.

How long is the course?

The degree requires three years of full-time study, the last two years of which are taken on the Clayton campus of Monash University.

Course details

Five or six subjects are studied in each of the four semesters that comprise the second and third years of the Monash course. Full-time study involves approximately 24 hours of class-time per week.

The subjects of the second year of the course include the topics:

  • Programming using C language
  • Circuit theory, electronics
  • Mathematics and statistics
  • Operating systems
  • Digital systems and digital design
  • Telecommunications
  • Computer organisation

The subjects of the third year build on those of the second year and include more advanced topics:

  • Industrial project
  • Management
  • Professional communications
  • Industrial electronics & instrumentation
  • Computer engineering
  • Embedded microprocessor systems
  • Data communications

Students also choose from a range of electives including:

  • Microprocessor programming
  • Real time control and software engineering
  • Computer graphics
  • Object-oriented programming C++
  • Computer graphics (including JAVA)

The graduate

Students completing the Bachelor of Technology (Computer Studies) can be expected to have:

  • an understanding of software and its development
  • knowledge of a wide range of computer based tools and systems and their uses
  • an understanding of the principles of management necessary for effective business operations
  • knowledge of modern communications techniques.

Further studies

Graduates of the Bachelor of Technology (Computer Studies) may qualify for entry to a Graduate Diploma in Education, other graduate diplomas or master degrees.

Students who elect to study Engineering Mathematics as part of their course may be eligible after graduation to enter the Bachelor of Engineering in the branch of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering with advanced standing. Places for this course are limited.

Who is eligible to apply?

Students who have successfully completed all subjects of the first year of the diploma or students who have completed the diploma at either Holmesglen Institute of TAFE or at the Frankston campus of Chisholm Institute may apply.

Students who have completed equivalent studies may also apply.

Students who complete the diploma can transfer to BTech(CompSt) with additional credits, ie., they are not required to complete all level 2 and 3 subjects. Credit is dependent on the subjects undertaken in the diploma.

What degree is awarded?

On successful completion of the course students will be awarded the degree of:

Bachelor of Technology (Computer Studies)
(BTech(CompSt))

How to apply?

The TAFE institutes are the first point of contact, for Level 1 study.

Prospective students wishing to enter the second year at Monash should obtain a direct application form from the Faculty of Engineering Office at the Clayton Campus or from their TAFE institute and return it with the relevant information by the due date.

Applicants must have passed all first year subjects of an appropriate diploma to be eligible for an interview, which is part of the selection procedure. Applicants with equivalent studies are also eligible.

International students

International students who meet the entry requirements are welcome to apply for the course. An application form for International Students may be obtained from the Faculty of Engineering Office at the Clayton or Caulfield Campus.

Course recognition

Graduates are also eligible for Affiliate-Technologist membership of The Institution of Engineers, Australia. The course is also fully accredited with the Australian Computer Society at the Professional Level.
