Steven Lade

Course: Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Engineering

Stephen Lade commenced his illustrious experience at Monash in 2000 specialising in electrical and computer systems engineering and completed an honours year in physics.

“I chose Monash for it’s excellent reputation, and because the campus and the people felt better on Open Days than other universities.”

Stephen says the best thing about his undergraduate experience was “the chance to develop, both socially and academically, in a supportive environment. In engineering, my favourite subject was Electronics 2 because I felt I was learning circuits of real use in the workplace, and we were able to construct them professionally on our own custom circuit boards.”

Whilst at Monash, Stephen tutored both secondary school and university students, and worked as a demonstrator for the Faculty of Science. He also found time to participate in the Monash Bushwalking and Outdoors Club, and undertake two semesters on exchange at Luleå University of Technology, Sweden.

“I was fortunate, as an outdoors-orientated person, to find myself in country and amongst people who truly feel the same way. In my first semester I met people from all over world; in my second I learnt about the Swedish language, customs and people. Academically, my host university was oriented more practically orientated than I was used to, which was a challenging but worthwhile learning experience. During my year on exchange I skied on frozen seas, scaled mountain peaks, sweated in snow-clad saunas, barbecued under the midnight sun, became overwhelmed by the northern lights, ice-skated on the water hazards of the local golf course… sorry to get carried away, but it was fun.”

“Engineers design what people often take for granted: everything from wind turbines to harbour bridges, heart monitors and breweries! If this interests you, you should seriously consider engineering.”

Testimony to Stephen’s exceptional talent is the myriad academic prizes he has been awarded. They include, a Sir John Monash Deans Scholarship, Monash University Global Scholarship, The T.H. Laby Medal, the RS Components Award, the J.J. McNeill Prize, the Solar Energy Applications Research Group Prize, the Wilson, the Transformer Company Prize, the McGraw-Hill Book Prize, the Dean’s List Fellowship Award (Science), the Esso and Mobil Honours List, the Monash Vice-Chancellor’s Undergraduate Research Scholarship, an Esso Prize for Electronics, a Graham Beard Memorial Third Year Prize, and The Ian Langlands Award.

Stephen believes the heart of engineering is design, combining theoretical and practical knowledge, with the task’s requirements to produce a viable solution. “Engineers design what people often take for granted: everything from wind turbines to harbour bridges, heart monitors and breweries! If this interests you, then seriously consider engineering.”
