Title: "Machine Learning & its Applications"

Speaker: Dr. Mercy Selvaraj, Computer Science and Engineering department at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Anna University, India

Abstract:

Machine learning refers to a system capable of autonomous acquisition and integration of knowledge. This capacity to learn from experience, analytical observation, and other means, results in a system that can continuously self-improve and thereby offer increased efficiency and effectiveness. A successful understanding of how to make computers learn would open up many new uses of computers and new levels of competence and customization. A detailed understanding of information processing algorithms for machine learning might lead to a better understanding of human learning abilities as well.

Many algorithms such as Inductive learning, Reinforcement learning have been invented that are effective for certain types of learning tasks. Theoretical results have developed that characterize the fundamental relationship among the number of training examples observed, the number of hypothesis under consideration and the expected error in learned hypothesis. Many practical computer programs have been developed to exhibit useful types of learning and successful commercial applications are also in use.

The talk focuses on the significance of machine learning, describing a variety of learning paradigms and applications

About the speaker:

Dr. Mercy Selvaraj is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering department at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Anna University, India. Her research interests include Artificial Intelligence, Parallel algorithms and Open source tools. She has published 35 papers in International and National Journals and conferences. She has obtained her B.E. (Electronics and Instrumentation) in 1989 and M.E. (Applied Electronics) in 1991 from India. She has received her PhD degree in Computer Science and Engineering in 2000 from Madurai-Kamaraj University, India. She was awarded the ‘Fast Track Award for Young Scientist’ by Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India in 2004 and the ‘Career Award for Young Teachers’ by All India Council for Technical Education in 2005. She is a member of IEEE.
