Luleå University of Technology was founded in 1971. Its main campus is situated about 100 km below the Arctic Circle. The Gulf Stream gives Luleå, and the region, a milder winter and a short but pleasant summer.

There are approximately 12,500 students, 60 professors, 700 teaching staff and about 350 postgraduate students at the University. There are two faculties. The Faculty of Engineering dominates the University with about 2,300 students in the MSc Programs. The School of Business and the School of Education in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities have grown during the last ten years and each has about 1,000 students in their programs. At the Campus of Piteå, 50 km south of Luleå is the School of Music with about 250 students currently enrolled. The Department of Health Science is situated in the Campus of Boden, 40 km northwest of Luleå. The Space Engineering program is at the Kiruna campus.
