Welcome to the Luleå-Monash Collaboration Program Website. The program promotes collaboration in research, teaching and student exchange between Monash University and Luleå University of Technology.

Faculties and departments are encouraged to look at possibilities for collaboration with Lulea  in research and teaching, and to contact Kim Ng (kim.c.ng@eng.monash.edu.au) at Monash and Sven Molin (sven.molin@sm.luth.se) at Luleå to initiate discussions.  See PhD Polis program below re research initiatives.
  • Scholarship for Space Science and Engineering studies.  Lulea together with five other European Union universities have been successful in establishing an Erasmus Mundus Space Masters program which started its first intake in March 2005.  Monash University has been invited to put forward Masters candidates from either engineering or science (physics) background..  The two years Masters course in Space technology will be supported by scholarships (worth  Euro 20k per year).  For further information see http://www.ltu.se/spacemaster/.
  • Currently we have one graduate in the program and two other current students have been offered places for next year's course (starting October 2007).
  • The PhD Polis Program got off to an excellent start in September 2005 with four projects, three from Engineering and one from IT.  A fifth project in biomedical engineering has started in March 2006.  Each project has a PhD student enrolled in each university with joint supervision working collaboratively on an area of mutual and complementary interest, capitalising on the expertise of the researchers in both universities.  We were able to secure funding support of $27k from the Europe Steering Group's Strategic Initiatives Allocation for the Monash projects, as well as departmental and faculty support.  For details of the projects see PhD Polis Projects
  • ProcessIT Project: A/P Kim C Ng and his PhD graduate Dr Matthew Thurley have started collaborative work in a joint project with Lulea and Swedish mining companies LKAB and Boliden using their research results in image processing of rock piles.  The PhD graduate  has had his appointment extended to August 2008.
