| The first formal agreement defining the student
exchange was established
between the two universities in early 1998. Since then there has been
an
exchange of students every year. A new agreement has been signed in
June
2003 for a further five years.
At Luleå there are many subjects given in English
and, in general,
the textbooks are in English.
Monash students can therefore generally find a good study program in
English.
Some students find it challenging to study Swedish as well. Swedish
students
are bilingual, as are almost all Swedes.
Monash students in the exchange program are given a
grant from Monash
Abroad. Both Luleå and Monash students receive some financial
support from Luleå University.
Some of the positives of studying abroad, besides a
different learning
environment and range of courses, is the experience of a new social,
cultural
and natural environment, and the formation of new friendships. The
Australian
student will go to a place just 100 km south of the Arctic Circle! In
winter,
there is darkness, cold, snow and thick ice on the sea. In summer,
there
is 24 hours daylight, a lot of flowers and excellent opportunities for
outdoor activities. Visit these sites for more information on Luleå
and Northern
Sweden (Norbotten).
