Student Internet Reasonable Use Policy
During your studies you will be expected to make
reasonable
use of the Internet for research and communications with academic staff and other students.
The Department pays for Internet access as part of your educational programs as it does for other resources you use in laboratories for example.
Some uses of the Internet result in very large financial charges to the Department and are not part of your educational program. Internet use which is not directly related to your studies, including the following, is
not permitted
:
-
downloading or exchanging audio and video files including MP3 files and other similar files;
-
streaming (listening or watching) video and audio in real-time including Internet "radio/television" stations or music sites;
-
downloading entire WWW/FTP sites or significant parts of sites particularly those including images and games programs.
Internet access using your userid which breaches this policy may result in you
personally
being charged the cost of this access, and any additional administrative charges which may apply.
You can check your use using the your Monash Portal page at :
http://my.monash.edu.au/
The Department currently accepts an upper limit of $10 per month in the teaching periods as being reasonable use. You will be charged for any balance which exceeds $80 per year. Any unpaid debts will automatically be recorded on your student record.
All Internet transactions are recorded and can be traced to a particular userid
. For this reason you must keep your userid and password secure. If you have reason to believe that others may have obtained and could be using your userid then you must report it immediately.
In some cases your studies may require you to access material not normally permitted under this policy. In this case you must obtain written approval
signed
by your supervisor or lecturer
before
proceeding. The approval must be handed to the General Office. In these cases the Department will recover the cost of this access from the appropriate project or grant account.
All users should be familiar with the University's policy on
'Acceptable use of information technology facilities by students'
