Transition to New BE, BCSE, BTE and BTech(CompStud) CoursesIntroductionAs part of the introduction of 6cp units, new level 3 AND 4 courses will be taught in 2007.
The new course does represent a significant change in the content and style of units. In many cases, there will be no direct replacement. It is therefore important that your enrolment in semester 2, 2006 (this next semester) is structured to minimise the impact of the changes in the course. All 4-credit-point units will not be taught after 2006 (with the exception of a few level 4 electives, ECE4908 and ECE4705 see below). Special revised schedules are provided for all students in Level 4 next year, to allow them to complete their degree with the new 6cp units. Be assured that no student will suffer as a result of this course change, provided you follow the advice of the department in the transition. Inappropriate enrolment due to a failure to seek or follow departmental advice will however result in the need to take additional units requiring additional cost and time. Note also that this reassurance does not necessarily apply if you fail a unit. In order to complete academic requirements of your degree, you must not only complete the prescribed number of credit points, but also the prescribed schedule. If you still have units outstanding in level 3 at the end of 2006, you will be caught up in the changes and unable to complete the old schedule as these units will no longer be taught. In many cases your best option may be to complete the academic content of the new schedule with a tailored mix of old and new units. If you do not fit into any of the categories below, you must seek advice from the course advisor who may refer you to the level 3 coordinator. Students in the following categories need to consider carefully their enrolment in the coming semester and/or next year, to ensure they do not suffer as a result of the course changes. A. Students who are caught between the new and old courses, because they started midyear or are doing a course which prescribes that units from level 2 or 3 are to be taken over multiple years. These issues were addressed in mid-2005, and the prescriptions are included in the departmental Undergraduate Handbook 2006(orange book). B. Students who would expect to do level 4 next year. Because the new level 4 is being introduced ‘ahead of time’ in 2007, students who would normally do level 4 based on the old course will be doing equivalent material in the new course structure. Read about the revised schedule and units available. C. Students who have, as a result of failure or for other reasons, not completed the level 3 core material. Read our transition advice and the units available. IMPORTANTIf you have any questions in relation to what is the correct enrolment, please contact the ECSE course advisor, Ms Ros Rimington who may refer you to the appropriate level coordinator. They will be happy to advise you.
